Sanjay’s portrayal of Vicky was top-notch. He was slimmer then, and his young and innocent looks compelled the audience to connect instantly with this Mahesh Bhatt film. Pankaj Udhas’s evergreen number ‘Chitti Aayi Hai’ can leave you teary-eyed even today.
Saajan (1991)

Sanjay managed to outshine everyone else in this Lawrence D’Souza film, which featured biggies like Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit. He played a poet (Aman) to perfection. Despite his macho personality, it was Sanjay’s eyes that did most of the talking in the film. And the songs? They have a haunting quality, which has become so rare nowadays.
Sadak (1991)

A Mahesh Bhatt film, this was one of the highest grossers in the 90s. A lot of credit for the film’s success goes to Sanjay's portrayal of Ravi, a man who overcomes all obstacles to save the love of his life (Pooja Bhatt) from flesh trade. The film borrowed several elements from Martin Scorsese’s 1976 classic Taxi Driver.
Khalnayak (1993)

This Subhash Ghai movie had Jackie Shroff playing the hero, but it’s remembered even today for Sanjay’s villainous performance. He did full justice to his character of Ballu, a criminal. Who can ever forget Sanjay in the song Nayak Nahi Khalnayak Hoon Main?
Daag-The Fire (1999)

Sanjay was brilliant in his portrayal of Karan, an unflinching former soldier who couldn’t tolerate the injustice faced by his family. This action-packed revenge drama, directed by Raj Kanwar, was liked by the masses and critics alike.
Vaastav (1999) & Hathyar (2002)

Sanjay's performance as Raghu in Vaastav was equally well-received by the masses and critics. His towering personality suited the character to the T, and is till date considered his best performance. The sequel, Hathyar (2002) couldn't create a similar impact with the critics. None the less, Dutt's portrayal of Boxer Bhai made the movie a commercial success. Both films were directed by Mahesh Manjrekar.
Kurukshetra (2000)

In this Mahesh Manjrekar film, Sanjay played ACP Prithviraj Singh. His performance was so powerful, it changed -- at least to some extent -- the image of the police force. The film was was widely appreciated.
Jodi No. 1 (2001)

Sanjay began his career as a romantic hero, but soon became an action star. However, when people saw his comic performance in this David Dhawan film, they fell in love with that as well. His on-screen equation with Govinda was mind-blowing, and the audiences just couldn’t get enough of it.
Munnabhai MBBS (2003) & Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006)

Munnabhai, the goon with the golden heart, won over a million hearts in no time. Both the films, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, did great with the audiences, and terms like Jaadu Ki Jhappi', Waatt, and Gandhigiri became national lingo. Sanjay’s superb on-screen chemistry with Arshad Warsi (Circuit) was another reason people loved these films. The third installment of the series is set to roll pretty soon.
Agneepath (2012)

Who could have thought that Sanjay will dazzle as Kancha Cheena, a role played to perfection by Danny Denzongpa in the 1990 version of the film? Well, Sanjay added his special magic to the character and the rest, as they say, is history. His bald look, bulging biceps and evil laughter made the character iconic.
